Keep customer history while updating Viber contact details. Learn which number to check and why an old registration result cannot confirm a new number or identity.

A customer says, “I have a new number,” but last month’s spreadsheet says the old number was registered on Viber. Should you keep it or overwrite it? First establish which number changed, whether the Viber account changed too, and how the new contact detail was confirmed. Rerunning the old list is not the first step.

The old result remains a record of what that task returned for the old number. It cannot be transferred to the new number. Even if the old number still checks as registered today, that does not establish that it remains the original customer’s preferred contact point.

A new SIM does not necessarily mean a new Viber number

Viber explains that, after changing a SIM, a user can keep the existing Viber number or update it to the new number.[1] A customer supplying a new telephone or SMS number therefore does not, by itself, confirm that their Viber account has moved.

Ask directly: “Do you also use this new number for Viber, and which number should we use from now on?” That is more reliable than guessing from matching profile photos or an old registration result. If only the handset changed, do not create a second contact unnecessarily.

Viber’s contact-management help also explains saving a contact’s new number from a change notification in an existing chat.[2] Use the records you can actually see alongside the customer’s confirmation. The absence of a notification is not proof that no number change occurred.

Preserve the customer relationship while updating the number

Suppose an existing customer provides a new number through an established communication channel. The following is an illustrative contact-maintenance table, not a checking service’s default export:

Situation Old number New number Next action
Confirmed update from the same customer Keep as historical contact information Record the confirmed replacement Use the agreed contact channel
An unfamiliar number claims to be the customer Do not overwrite yet Mark as unconfirmed Confirm through an established channel
New phone, unchanged number Keep the existing entry No new number Investigate contact sync if needed

Orders, service history and the customer’s name belong to the customer record; a phone number is a contact detail that can change. Creating a completely new customer row can lose useful history. Overwriting the old number without a trace can make earlier conversations difficult for colleagues to understand.

Confirm payment-detail or other important changes separately through an established, trusted method. A Viber registration check is not an identity check.

Which number should you check?

If the customer has confirmed a new number and you need to fill in its Viber registration status, check that number. Do not copy “registered” from the old record. Whether the old number needs another check depends on whether you still have a reason to use it, not on an automatic rule to check both.

For a single customer who has just confirmed the change from the new number in Viber, the conversation already provides direct evidence; a separate bulk task may add little. A batch of confirmed customer updates, or an existing customer list missing Viber status, is a better fit for the AppShai Viber Number Checker. Its manual registration-check workflow accepts a TXT file and exports Excel results containing the phone number and registration status.

This is number checking, not a number-change lookup. Submitting an old number should not be expected to reveal that person’s new number. The relationship between the two must come from customer confirmation or existing business records. Other fields in a Viber activity task cannot substitute for that confirmation.

Different results do not automatically mean the list is wrong

If the new number checks as registered and the old one does not, record each result separately. If both are registered, that is not a reason to create duplicate marketing contacts. Follow the customer’s choice of contact point rather than continuing to use an old number simply because a checker still finds it.

If you recently communicated through a number but its check gives a different result, first compare the exact submitted number, country code and task details. Keep that specific record for the provider to investigate. If the problem is incomplete contacts on your phone, use Viber’s contact-sync troubleshooting instead.[2]

For a batch of numbers that needs channel-status checks, start through the Viber service page’s registration and trial options. Put only the numbers to be checked in the file and retain customer relationships in your original sheet. Match results by number and update the confirmed contact point; do not ask the registration result to decide who the person is.
