Prepare Suriname +597 records under the updated six-to-eight-digit numbering plan, then interpret the age, gender, picture and mapped-number columns without erasing unknown values.
A Suriname WhatsApp demographic list should no longer be cleaned with the assumption that every national number contains exactly seven digits. A 2026 numbering update published through the ITU describes national numbers ranging from six to eight digits and includes mobile, VoIP, IoT and other allocations. The numbering purpose must be reviewed before age, gender or picture results are attached to a contact record.
The process uses two separate controls: preserve the current +597 numbering structure, then interpret the five documented WS gender-and-age columns as screening outputs rather than official WhatsApp identity attributes.
The 2026 +597 update changes data-cleaning assumptions
The Telecommunications Authority Suriname announced updated resources through ITU Operational Bulletin No. 1334. The material includes +597 601XXXX for a non-geographic IoT allocation and +597 91XXXXX for VoIP, while the overview gives a minimum national-number length of six digits and a maximum of eight. This makes “force every row to seven digits” an unsafe cleaning rule.
| Structure after +597 | Example purpose in the published plan | Preparation control |
|---|---|---|
| Six digits | Mobile or existing national resources | Preserve all digits; do not left-pad |
| Seven digits | Some mobile, VoIP and non-geographic resources | Classify with prefix and provenance |
| 601XXXX | Eight-digit IoT range | Do not truncate it into a mobile pattern |
| 91XXXXX | Seven-digit VoIP range | Do not label it mobile from length alone |
Review the 2026 ITU operational bulletin and the complete +597 numbering-plan presentation for the current allocation detail.
Number-plan validity does not guarantee WhatsApp suitability
A syntactically valid +597 record may represent a fixed, IoT, VoIP, mobile or other service. If the business dataset is meant to contain mobile contacts, preserve non-mobile and unresolved records as exceptions instead of modifying them until they pass a length test. The source system, acquisition date and stated country should travel with the raw number.
- Keep the original string and source-record identifier.
- Treat plus signs, 00 prefixes, spaces and hyphens as presentation elements only.
- Separate country code 597 from the national-number portion for review.
- Allow six-, seven- and eight-digit national numbers before applying allocation logic.
- Write only in-scope, reviewed telephone numbers to the task TXT file.
The WS gender-and-age export contains five defined columns
AppShai documents phone number, age, gender, profile picture and mapped WhatsApp phone number for this task. Activity time, active days, skin tone, avatar type and business-account status belong to other WS service schemas. Do not add those columns to the result merely because they would make the dataset appear more complete.
| Column | Defensible use | Do not rename it as |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | Reconcile upload and source | A permanent person identifier |
| Mapped WhatsApp number | Preserve the returned number relationship | An automatic replacement for the source |
| Age | Summarize returned age values and missingness | Official birth date or verified age |
| Gender | Report returned groups with an unknown denominator | Legal sex or self-described identity |
| Profile picture | Support result-presence and exception review | Proof of the named individual |
Unknown values are part of the finding
WhatsApp explains that access to profile pictures, about details and last-seen information depends on privacy choices and relationship context. Users can also choose whether to add profile information. The official WhatsApp privacy overview provides the necessary boundary: a screening dataset is not the platform’s official demographic register.
Do not fill a blank age or gender cell from a name, picture or country stereotype. Report the number of populated, blank, reconciled and exceptional rows. A percentage without those denominators can look precise while describing only a small, selected fraction of the list.
Run the task with a clear separation between input and output
Create a TXT upload containing one complete reviewed number per line. On AppShai WhatsApp Number Checker, choose WS gender-and-age screening. The platform accepts TXT input and returns an Excel workbook with the service-specific fields after processing; Excel and CSV are not accepted as substitute upload formats.
First reconcile the phone-number columns to the original records. Only then analyze age, gender and profile-picture values. If registration or activity is required, select the matching service and keep those results separate. The WhatsApp task-selection guide explains why choosing the narrow task matters.
Small datasets require visible denominators
A few malformed rows can materially change a percentage in a small national segment. Before reporting an age band or gender distribution, disclose the original rows, valid in-scope +597 numbers, reconciled task results, populated demographic values and unknowns. Avoid publishing a single percentage without the population it describes.
| Layer | Counts to retain | Control objective |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Original, duplicate and malformed rows | Describe input quality |
| Number plan | Six-, seven- and eight-digit distribution; unresolved purpose | Detect obsolete cleaning rules |
| Reconciliation | Matched and mapping-exception rows | Attach fields to the right record |
| Demographic result | Populated and unknown age/gender values | Provide a valid denominator |
Use aggregate insight without creating an identity claim
Reasonable applications include describing the returned distribution in a first-party customer list, identifying records that need manual reconciliation and preparing hypotheses for localized content. High-impact individual decisions, identity confirmation and unsolicited marketing should not be based on a picture or inferred demographic field.
Registration status and screening results also do not establish permission to contact someone. Provenance, notice, consent and the applicable rules must be handled by the organization that collected and uses the list.
How to handle a list built around the old seven-digit assumption
Do not truncate +597 records merely because they fail an old seven-digit rule. Use the 2026 numbering material to retain national numbers from six to eight digits, and separate mobile, VoIP, IoT and unresolved uses before the WhatsApp task.
When reviewing age and gender results, show the valid-number count, matched rows, populated values and unknown values. These denominators prevent a small number of Suriname exceptions from becoming a misleading demographic percentage.
