Article summary
Choose registration or activity checks by decision cost, and separate data quality, operational savings and incremental revenue from activity observations.
Neither Registration nor Activity is universally “better.” The right task is the one whose fields are sufficient for the current decision. Registration is smaller when the question is platform state. Activity is justified only when a dated observation changes an approved process. Neither directly proves ROI.
Work backward from the decision
| Decision | Minimum task | Evidence still missing |
|---|---|---|
| Clean platform-registration state | Registration | Permission and identity |
| Review by observation recency | Activity | Demand and purchase intent |
| Decide whether to market | Neither is sufficient | Provenance and permission |
| Prove incremental revenue | Both are only variables | Experiment and finance |
Compare the actual schemas
For WhatsApp, WS Registration returns phone and registration result. WS Activity returns phone, activity time, active days and mapped phone. Wider fields bring more missing states, access control and expiry work, so they should not be collected by default.
Split ROI into three layers
| Layer | Measurable outcome | Bad calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Data quality | Format exceptions, unknowns, reconciliation | Match rate × order value |
| Operational efficiency | Handling time and invalid-queue reduction | Calling all savings revenue |
| Commercial increment | Contribution-margin change versus holdout | Crediting every sale to checking |
When Registration is the better fit
Database migration, channel-state inventory and a binary platform question often need the smaller task. It is easier to explain and avoids a rapidly expiring activity field. Unknown and error still remain separate from unregistered.
When Activity adds decision value
Activity time and days matter when a service team has a defined recency use, a refresh_after policy and an operation that genuinely changes because of the observation. If the team contacts everyone exactly as before, wider collection added no value.
Connect AIPUSH output to an experiment
AIPUSH accepts TXT and exports Excel by task. Retain contact_id, batch_id, checked_at and task type when joining assignment. A Registration group, Activity group and queue-unmodified holdout should receive comparable copy and timing.
Measure increment, not correlation
Compare meaningful replies, opportunities and contribution profit per thousand eligible, permitted records, subtracting task, cleaning, integration and labor costs. Higher sales in an activity cohort may reflect better customers at baseline. Randomization or a credible matched baseline reduces that bias.
Risk metrics have veto power
Stop scaling when complaints, opt-outs, identity errors or mapping collisions rise, even if short-term revenue appears higher. Activity cannot revive an opted-out person, and Registration cannot make unexplained provenance marketable.
A fast selection rule
If removing the activity fields leaves the decision unchanged, choose Registration. Without an expiry policy, do not collect Activity. Without a counterfactual, do not claim ROI. Without permission, neither task admits a phone to marketing.
Phrase the finding at the evidence level
State how many exceptions a task reduced or how much handling it saved in the tested sample. Do not claim that “active users buy more.” The smaller sufficient task is often closer to real return than the one with more columns.
