To check whether one phone number has a WhatsApp account, use the number in the correct international format and look it up through the official app or WhatsApp’s Click to Chat route. Check one number from your phone
- Correct the number format. Keep the country calling code and use the destination’s international numbering format. Remove a domestic dialing prefix only when that country’s rules call for it; there is no safe universal rule to delete the first zero from every number.
- Save it as a contact. Put the full international number in the phone-number field, allow WhatsApp to access contacts, then refresh the contact list in the official app. If the contact appears, WhatsApp currently recognizes an account for that number in the app.
- Use Click to Chat if needed. WhatsApp’s help page documents links in the form
https://wa.me/<number>, so you can start a chat without first saving the person. Use the international number and follow WhatsApp’s formatting instructions: omit the plus sign, spaces, brackets, and hyphens. Opening the chat does not itself send a message.

If no contact appears, troubleshoot before labeling it unregistered
- Check the country calling code, missing digits, and any domestic prefix included by mistake.
- Make sure the number is in the contact’s phone field, not its notes, and that WhatsApp can access the address book.
- Refresh the official app and try the Click to Chat format once more.
- If the two checks still disagree, keep the record for review instead of automatically treating an error as a negative registration result.
Profile photos, About information, last-seen details, and online visibility can be affected by privacy settings. A missing photo or online indicator is not proof that the number is unregistered; seeing a profile also does not establish ongoing activity.
When a contact list is too large for manual checks
Contacts and Click to Chat are practical for a few records, not for manually working through a business list. For a list, first confirm that you have a lawful source and an appropriate purpose, then select a check that answers the question you actually have. An account match is not permission to message
Registration answers whether an account is present, not whether a business may contact its owner. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says businesses may contact people only when they have the person’s phone number or username and opt-in permission for subsequent messages or calls. Businesses must also honor requests to stop or opt out. A screening result does not replace those requirements.
